looking at youth players around 10-15 rated the other day and forgot to ask, so I'll do it now. is there any way to predict a player's growth/increase in rating, or is it all just guesswork?

The player's training history is the history of his growth. However, as a free player, you can't hire trainers or improve your training ground past a certain point.
It's not worth your while buying players hoping to improve them. So many players do have premium and can train their players up faster and add much more value than you can. You may even cause good players to reduce in value because every day where the training is below average is a day wasted.
As a free player, the best thing you can do is try to make a trading profit so you can buy better players or save money until it becomes worth paying for premium. Every player on your squad should be on the transfer list for more than you paid for him. You should not be buying any player unless you think you can sell him on for a profit.
