Finn-ished?

Written 11 April 2021, 10:25

It is with some sadness, that Dynamo Groby today confirm that the Finnish Project may be coming to the end of its sustainable life. The club has enjoyed remarkable success with the Finnish Project, a steady hand on the tiller driving Dynamo into a greater position than ever before. The current stadium and facilities both the senior and youth team enjoy are down to the management of the club throughout the Finnish Project, the care needed to guide the team onwards with only players from one nation keeping the ship steady as we plotted our way to better things.

This decision will not been taken lightly by the club, and several weeks have elapsed whilst the debate has raged. It is with a very heavy heart that we announce this possible change. There are several factors behind why the club are considering this as an option:

1) Lack of Finns -- It has become harder and harder to recruit talented Finnish youths. There seems to be fewer and fewer of them about, and certain positions are very scarce at both youth and senior level.

2) Lack of resources -- In the recent push for top flight competitiveness, which is what the whole project was aiming for in the long term, the club has spent a large amount of its resources, and is now beginning to feel the strain this has brought.

3) Player market -- Bringing in Finnish youths and developing them for the senior team, selling them on when the next youth came through was a slow but profitable model for the club. However, the youth markets now, and transfer fees involved mean this is now a much harder proposition when limited to players of only one nation. Put bluntly, this model is no longer the certainty that is was in terms of being profitable and sustainable for the club. Whilst we are sure we can and could continue to operate in the manner we did when building resources, the club needs to look at what it wants to achieve in the future.

This is quite possibly the biggest change in the club since the Finnish Project started. There are other considerations and options being debated whilst we work on coming to a decision. The recent months have been the most successful the club has ever had on the pitch, with targets set at the start of the Finnish Project having been achieved:

We reached and maintained an upper mid-table level in the Premier League.
We reached several FA Cup Finals.
We reached several U23 FA Cup Finals.
We reached and maintained an upper mid-table level in the Greek top flight.
We competed for the Greek top flight title in some seasons.
We have WON the U23 FA Cup.
We have WON the Greek Cup.
We have had many international call ups at all age groups.

All of this has been achieved whilst running the Finnish Project.

Dynamo will release a further press statement to the fans, outlining the current options under consideration for the club in the future.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do in the future!
I have released a similarly titled 'finished' post but with a more absolute sense of the term. I'm done with the game in its current state.
