Diamonds in Wooden Spoon Final Again!

Written 15 May 2013, 17:17

The Diamonds have qualified for the final of the ONTWC Wooden Spoon competition for the 2nd time in 3 appearances, knocking out Germany (Preston North End CF) in a 6-1 aggregate semi-final win!

After finishing 4th out of 5 in Group E (behind England IV, Scotland, Poland and in front of Belgium), the mighty Georgia once again fell short of reaching the knockout stages. However, the 4th place finish ensured that our Diamonds did not have to participate in the Wooden Spoon quarter-finals, and could await the winner of the match-up between Germany I (Peston North End CF) and England V (Maidstone Athletic). Germany's 5-0 aggregate win meant that they would face Georgia in the semi-finals.

In the first leg, played on Germany's turf, the game was very close and had it not been for an excellent performance from Achiko Kostava in goal, the Germans could've easily drawn, or even won. As it was, 2 first half goals from Kaladze and Megreladze were enough, despite Eduard Richthofen's strike for Germany.
At centre-mid, the new signing Shako Kinkladze proved key in intercepting the ball and initialising Georgian attacks, which earned him a MotM award on his debut for the club!

At home, the Georgians put in a beautiful performance, keeping 72% of possession, and having 14 shots at goal to Germany's 2. In the end, a 4-0 scoreline (Egadze, Megreladze, Chokheli x2) proved a fair reflection of the game.

Now, the Diamonds will face Switzerland, who have come a long way since being the whipping boys of the first One Nation Team WC, for the glory of the Wooden Spoon!
