Joy on Tyneside at first Cup Success

Written 18 December 2016, 20:28

There was joy and celebrations on Tyneside today as Newcastle U FC http://www.virtualmanager.com/clubs/1083778 won its first ever trophy.

Fans celebrated wildly as this still young team defeated favourites Team Prowler http://www.virtualmanager.com/clubs/183162 1-0 in a tight game at a packed Sir Kevin Keegan Stadium, recently expanded to a 90,000 capacity and looking wonderful with huge swathes of the crowd sporting the club's traditional black and white stripes. The winning goal came mid way through the second half from Pan Kokotis http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/10701286-pan-kokotis on Newcastle’s left, the Greek scoring his 203rd goal for the club he joined in the summer, netting for the 18th time this campaign. The assist was by South African defender Otto Tloome http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/10673818-otto-tloome, on a rare visit into the opposition’s half, who threw to Kokotis in an attacking position directly from a throw in, the Greek’s unstoppable wonderstrike hit with pace through the defense and into the top corner.

Impressive as the cup victory was, Newcastle’s semi-final performance was even better, the club from the second tier of the Brazilian league beating top flight Reservoir Dogs http://www.virtualmanager.com/clubs/781373 2-0 at the Dogs’ home ground in front of 88,000 fans. Goals came in each half, from Newcastle’s other two front men, kiwi international Scott Uncles http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/10438089-scott-uncles and the “Swiss Punisher” Klaus Vecchia http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/10508262-klaus-della-vecchia who only joined the Geordies two seasons ago, but has already netted 44 times, and living up to the nickname given him by the adoring Toon Army, which knows a thing or two about strikers.

The amazing season, which also saw promotion as champions back to the top flight of Brazilian football, is the highest point so far in the career of manager Rolf Bergström as well as for the club itself. Bergström paid great tribute to both fans and his players on what has been a remarkable season on both league and cup fronts; lucrative too with the team achieving over 11,000,000 in prize money, gate receipts and transfer sales with the young French goalkeeper Briot http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/11487631-baptiste-briot heading out of Newcastle for Sweden and the ambitious young team of Heath LYR http://www.virtualmanager.com/clubs/1043617

Club chairman David “two chins” Maguire was hailed by fans, players and manager alike for his support and stewardship of the club. In interviews with the Evening Chronicle and O Globo in Brazil, Maguire explained how proud he was of what his club had achieved. “It is barely believable how in just over 3 years we have gone from nowhere to cup winners, and delivered to our fans the success that they have wanted so much. To see Rafael (club captain Molina) http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/10542990-rafael-molina lift that trophy felt like the culmination of all our efforts over these years; I wasn’t the only one with tears in my eyes! Sure, the task now is for Rolf and the team to build on this wonderful moment and become an established Virtual Manager team, delivering more success to our incredible supporters, but having waited so long, and with the 3 near-misses of cup final defeats, this victory is so very sweet and I am sure we will all savour it for a long, long time.”

When the Journal tried interviewing Supporters’ Club (Magtastic Day) chairman Billie Whitehurst a few hours after the game, all the proud Geordie could manage was “Get in the xxxxxxx bag! xxxxxxx ace man, that was xxxxxxx fantashtic. Howay the Toon! Gan on!”. Manager Rolf Bergström was able to give a rather more sober reflection on this day. “I am so happy today, both in winning the league to get back to the top flight so soon, and of course to win the club’s first ever trophy. The team all played superbly, every player earned us this cup and I really am so proud of them. Relegation last year was a big disappointment, but you can see very clearly how the players have used that to make sure that this season they would give everything, and I am extremely delighted that David (Maguire) will now have to pay for a trophy cabinet!

Next season the team rejoins http://www.virtualmanager.com/leagues/9/1/1 at the top of the Brazilian pyramid after recently leaving the German league after 39 seasons which yielded two cup final defeats. There will definitely be a samba party down the Bigg Market tonight!
