Championship Success

Today Billie Whitehurst, Chairman of Magtastic Day, the supporters group for Newcastle U FC, expressed how happy he and the NUFC fans were about the wonderful victory for the club in this season's Scottish Division 3 Championship. The young team only lost 4 of its 30 fixtures and regularly sold out its (recently expanded) stadium for all its home games. The fans know how tough Division 2 is, but rather than contemplating a relegation fight in that very strong league next season, it's beers all round as the club and its fans can celebrate this high water-mark for all associated with the team.

Special thanks must go to club legend http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/8518767-hendrik-donnerborg who managed to net 41 times this season, an extraordinary achievement for the Dane who has made Tyneside a second home after his 9 seasons here; he will never have to buy a drink again in the region.

Even Donnerborg, great player though he is, may have struggled to score so many this season without the wonderful support of Ukrainian playmaker http://www.virtualmanager.com/players/8564549-danijel-janko who provided a record 22 assists in this championship-winning season.

As for manager Rolf Bergstrom, he thanked the fans for their ongoing and wonderful support, cheering on the players both home and away. "It is a pleasure to manage such a wonderful club. They and everyone associated with the team has made me and my family feel so welcome here. This season has been incredible, I think nobody expected us to get promoted, we were I think tipped to finish 5th or 6th, but winning such a prestigious league means the world to us all."

Asked what his plans were for next season, Bergstrom commented that the challenge would be very tough indeed to finish 12th, but that he would do all that he could to help his players to do the best that they can. "I think our longer term priority has to be to expand our stadium, we have thousands more that want to come and support the team but we are restricted to just 7100. If we can get a few more in each week, then that will be a win:win for our club's development, and that can only be a good thing.

Asked if this meant no significant investment in players in the next few seasons, all Bergstrom would say is that if the right player becomes available at the right price, the club would certainly look at it very closely. "We have a good young squad and I hope that they will continue to make a great impact in the next few years, with some talented young players already showing every sign of maturing into 1st team players. That has to be our focus now."
