Update for the weekend

Bubbles, FC Sunnyvale Developer 14 March 2014, 15:40

Here is a brief update on the things we've been working on this week.

Match Engine

Free kicks: In rare cases, it may happen that the ball ends up inside the penalty area when a free kick has been called - for instance if it rolls in there after the referee has blown the whistle. In these instances, the kicker now knows that he must first retrieve the ball and place it outside the penalty area before he takes the free kick.

Throw-in: In cases where a team has throw-in on their own half of the pitch, the players now place themselves significantly more cleverly, and the thrower will do what he can to get the ball away from his own side of the pitch.

Server and Rails upgrade

We now have access to a new virtual server intended to take over from one of our oldest physical machines. When the virtual server has been fully configured, and the old machine has scrapped, we can continue working on upgrade all of our servers to Rails 4.0.3

New intro character

The old intro character, who welcomed new clubs to the game and popped up when you got an achievement, was so scary looking that he made chickens stop laying eggs, and made small children weep.

So, some time ago we asked a graphics artist to come up with a new character for us. So it is my pleasure to present the new Simon:

He has now taken over the job as our intro character, and I think you'll agree he is a lot less scary than the old one.

Next week

Next week will continue to work with the servers, but we will also start working on adjustments in tactics editor. Right now we often get bug reports from managers who have made invalid substitution rules, and think it's a bug when they aren't executed during matches.

Therefore, our first step is to make the editor a bit more clever, making it impossible to create some of the most obvious examples of invalid rules.

In the longer term, we will also look at the possibility to select "Auto" in the substitution rules so that you don't need to name every player. Right now, many believe that if you do not choose a player name for a substitution rule, then one will be chosen automatically, but this is not the case. If you don't specify a name, the rule is invalid, and will never be carried out.

That's it from me today - have a nice weekend, everybody!
