Another major update!

Bubbles, FC Sunnyvale Developer 17 September 2013, 15:01

It's time for another large update of the new match simulator, and we've got a whole lot of new stuff for you.

  1. Larger view of the pitch

    In previous updates, some users complained that they could not see what their entire team was doing, because the new match viewer is "zoomed in" on a relatively small area of the pitch. This stands in stark contrast to the old match viewer, where you had the entire pitch on screen.

    Therefore, we have now added the ability to watch the matches in a much larger window. Just click on the screen size switcher button, when you're viewing a match.

  2. Display all player names

    Another frequent criticism has been that you couldn't see the names of all players on the pitch, but only a small handful of the ones closest to the ball.

    Therefore, we have added the option to toggle the display of all player names in the match viewer. In this mode, we only show the surnames, so that the names don't clutter up the screen.

  3. Play style

    The biggest part of this update is the implementation of different play styles. You can find the play style setting in the beta tactics editor

    Making 6 unique play styles has been a huge challenge. Because we only show 1-2 minutes of highlights from a 90 minute match, it is extremely difficult to make a play style obvious enough that you guys can recognize it in the few seconds that a highlight lasts.

    There are many who believe that the players do not follow the instructions you set in the old match engine. That's because the settings affect the probabilities that the players react in a certain way, but without making them follow orders to the letter. This means that in many cases you will not be able to clearly see the effect of the settings during a short highlight.

    With the new simulator we've been much more aggressive in "forcing" players to react in a way that makes your chosen play style more apparent. Therefore, managers with a keen eye should be able recognize each style of play in the new match simulator.

    The characteristics of the different play styles can be described in simple terms as follows:

* **Balanced**

    This is the style of play you'll have seen in all matches you've played in the new match engine up until now - no special characteristics.

* **Long ball**

   Players will do everything they can to pass far up the pitch to the forwarders, and are able to pass the ball to players up to half a pitch length away. You will see lots of high passes and switching between the right and left side of the pitch.

* **Short passes**

   Instead of dribbling, players will pass the ball far more often. You will see many quick passes back and forth. Most of them will be short, but you'll also see a few medium length passes.

* **Play wide**

   The player with the ball will move towards the wings and will attempt to pass the ball to players who are already in position out there. Wing players will also seek outwards, to get into a better position to receive a pass.

* **Counter attack**

   The team will generally stay further back on the pitch, while a few of the forwarders remain in an advance position. When the team captures the ball, they will try to expedite it up to the waiting forwarders as soon as possible, so that they can hopefully avoid having to fight their way through most of the opponent's defence.

* **Shoot on sight**

   Instead of trying to punch an opening in the opponent's defence, the team using this play style is far more likely to fire the ball at the goal as soon as it's in range.

This is just a brief overview of the play styles, and some of them have been implemented in greater detail than others. We will continue to refine them as development progresses, as well as after the new simulator has taken over for the old one.

We hope you like all the new updates, so hurry over to the beta section and arrange a few friendlies in the beta match simulator and experiment with the new play styles.
